Tuesday, my second week of starting at this new job and it has become quite a challenge. A little background may need to be in order. I am now working at the UBC Office of Learning Technology (emphasis on the technology part) as a Marketing Assistant. Sounds fancy doesn’t it? It’s just my excuse to be able to doodle and write all day. I got my own cubicle, free tazo tea, and a brand new Powerbook! Well new to me, not the office or the last one who used. Mighty powerful stuff if you ask me…and it’s so nice!
Anyway, me thinks I need to brush up on my technology some more. I am not computer illiterate. I did grow up with computers, cellphones, the Internet, and beepers. Eventually though I imagine myself waxing nostalgically how internet used to be only dial-up or cellphones could be used as violent weapons due to their sturdiness and immense size a.k.a brick-like. I have just in and out of meetings for the past week and for some them I leave frazzled or confused as before. All these acronyms, programs, and terminologies makes me feel I’m Cletus the slack-jawed yokel. “Hey ma! I can see your house up here. GET OFF THE DANGED ROOF!”
For someone who grew up with these hi-tech things, I am still in the dark with the innovations that we have right now. Catch-up is the game and I am in last place. I tend to visualize plans when I go into meetings but when I’m there I still have no idea what they’re talking about. Even this blog has the power to be a website. Amazing ain’t it?!
And here comes, the deep-thinking for today: “We are more connected than ever before but we are still isolated from one another.” Ponder on that one. It’s just weird that a lot of people sit in front of their computers all day but they lack that interaction that we were born to crave. Balancing is my goal but it is still a challenge. I know I won’t be able to escape this techno-craze…hmmmmm unless I take over the WORLD!..no wait, that’s plan B or some extinction-level event where technology crashes and we become hunter-gatherers again. Before these things come, I think I need to read up some more.
